Rhythm Section (We’ll leave instructions here that are duplicated on the information letter. It may make for easier access to recorded material (links).
Bass
(Acoustic bass is preferred, but electric bass is acceptable.)
● Play the written bass part from “Jazz Bass, example 1.pdf.”
● Play a walking bass line on “A Misty Moment” (Jazz Bass, example 2) for two choruses and solo on a third chorus if you choose. This may be done with the provided background track or live rhythm section.
● Play a bass line on a Latin tune of your choosing for one chorus and solo for one chorus if you choose. This may be done with a background track (bass part removed) or live rhythm section.
Guitar
● Play the written guitar part from “Jazz Guitar, example 1.”
● Comp sixteen measures of chord changes from a medium tempo swing feel chart, unaccompanied. Recommendation: if possible, use materials you are currently playing in your school jazz ensemble.
● Improvise a solo playing three choruses of up tempo Bb blues. This may be done with the provided background track or live rhythm section.
Drums
For each of the first five exercises, play sixteen measures trading fours divided alternately as four bars of time, four bars of solo, etc., within each sixteen measure exercise.
● Play sixteen measures of medium swing. (quarter note = 120)
● Play sixteen measures of fast swing. (quarter note = 200)
● Play sixteen measures of shuffle. (quarter note = 152)
● Play sixteen measures of bossa nova. (quarter note = 152)
● Play sixteen measures of contemporary straight eighth. (quarter note = 100)
● Play “Big Band Excerpt – #1” as instructed on the separate Drum Set page.
